Monday- 10/21- Gaitlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN are really interesting places. So many dinner shows and every type of tourist trap entertainment you can imagine is there. I am sure the kids would have easily stayed for a week, but our entertainment budget certainly would not allow that. This morning James was up before the sun, beside himself with excitement to go to the Titanic Museum. We were the first ones in the parking lot and waiting to go in as soon as they opened the doors. They don’t allow photography so we just took some outside pictures. We spent over three hours reading and exploring every possible exhibit. Naturally, James already knew everything there was to know about the Titanic, but even he learned some things;) After the museum the kids voted unanimously to take a go cart ride. We all got to drive a go cart (Audrey in the rookie area) and even ended the morning with a few arcade games. We set off on a long driving block and landed safely in Birmingham, AL.
Tuesday- 10/22- We hit the 2,000 mile mark on this trip! Before leaving Birmingham we toured the Southern Museum of Flight. It was definitely small scale and off the beaten path, but we have found that these tend to be the best museums. We were almost the only ones there and learned lots about early aviation, the Tuskegee Airmen (since that national monument was just a little too far out of our way), the Cold War, the Korean War, etc. We left around lunchtime and headed for Mobile. Just off the exit in Mobile we were welcomed with what looked to be the end of a police chase since there were 9 police cars surrounding a big black truck and all of the cops were out of their cars with their guns drawn. Luckily this was just next door to the restaurant we were trying to eat at and not in that parking lot. We checked out the worlds best chicken fingers at a restaurant call Foosacklys. The kids decided that they like “home made” (the frozen kind from the grocery store) better, but I thought they were great. I also splurged and got them drinks of lemonade and tea/lemonade… none of them would drink it because it had, “too much sugar”... insert eye roll... Since it was the south, that left us with two enormous drink and on one to drink them;) PB&J count- 32.
Wednesday- 10/23- Today started at the USS Alabama Battleship Park. We spent the morning touring the battle ship, the USS Drum- a submarine on land, and many other tanks and aircraft on display. Ironically, the first sign we saw when walking onto the USS Alabama was a sign listing her sister ships and one was the USS Massachusetts which we saw just last spring at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. They were almost exactly the same so it was great reinforcement for the kids. After leaving we jumped on Rt. 90 and headed for New Orleans (the scenic route of course!). We took in the post Katrina sights of Biloxi and Gulfport Mississippi… so many casinos and so much land for sale. It was a gorgeous drive. We ended the day getting settled into our rental place in New Orleans and Gabe arrived safely from the airport to join us:) PB&J count- still 32, we splurged for Subway at lunch.
